Data Provided to IPEDS
The Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) is a system of interrelated surveys conducted annually by the U.S. Department of Education’s (DOE) National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). IPEDS is designed to collect data from all primary providers of postsecondary education in the U.S. that participate in federal student financial aid programs.
- Informing Policy and Decision-Making: IPEDS data helps policymakers, educational institutions, and researchers make informed decisions about higher education policies and practices.
- Ensuring Accountability: By collecting data on various aspects of postsecondary education, IPEDS promotes transparency and accountability among institutions.
- Supporting Research: Researchers use IPEDS data to analyze trends, identify issues, and propose solutions in higher education.
- Providing Public Information: IPEDS data is accessible to the public, helping students, parents, and other stakeholders make informed choices about education options.
The IPEDS data collection process is divided into three periods each year: Fall, Winter, and Spring.
- Registration (August): This period includes Registration, Report Mapping, Institution ID, Institutional Characteristics (open through fall collection)
- Fall (September-October): This period includes surveys on Institutional Characteristics, Cost I, Completions, and 12-month Enrollment.
