Using Power BI on a Mac

Most users working on business intelligence and reporting projects at BYU–Hawaii use Power BI Desktop to create reports and then publish them to the Power BI online service for sharing.

Power BI Desktop is a free application installed on your local computer that allows you to connect to, transform, and visualize data. With Power BI Desktop, you can connect to multiple data sources, combine them into a data model, and build visualizations that can be published and shared within the BYU–Hawaii Power BI environment.

To install Power BI Desktop on a Windows device, click the button below and follow the instructions to download and install the application from the Microsoft Store.

The Power BI online service is a cloud-based (software-as-a-service) reporting platform that allows users to view and interact with reports and dashboards published by BYU–Hawaii report authors. You can access the service through your web browser at app.powerbi.com

Power BI Premium

BYU–Hawaii uses Power BI Premium capacity to support reporting and analytics across the university. Premium provides dedicated capacity for consistent performance and supports larger data volumes. Reports published to Premium workspaces can be securely shared with BYU–Hawaii users without requiring individual Power BI Pro licenses.

Power BI Premium enables:

  • Broad distribution of reports and dashboards across campus
  • Reliable performance for enterprise reporting
  • Centralized management of shared Power BI content

Microsoft does not support Power BI Desktop on macOS. However, users can still view and interact with reports through a web browser.

To create or edit reports using Power BI Desktop on a Mac, you will need to run a virtual Windows environment on your Mac. Click the button below to learn more about available options and setup instructions.
