Academic Options for Students
Academic options explained (including options for students with serious health problems or other complications).
Drop
What
- May be done online through the first four school days without charge. After the first four days, there is a fee of $10 per class dropped.
Impact
- Stay above 12 credits: keep full-time status.*
- Fall below 12 credits: lose full-time status.**
- Get off track with MAP?
- May impact tuition calculation.
- May impact Federal financial aid.
How
- After the first four days, fill out Add/Drop Form.
- Get academic advisor's signature.
- Would need to get International Student Services and Financial Aid & Scholarship signatures if dropping below 12 credits.
- Turn in to Office of the Registrar. The fee will be applied to your account and can be paid at the Cashier's Office.
Withdraw
What
- Withdrawing from a class after the first five weeks of a semester (or less for a block class).
Impact
- $10 fee per class.
- Will result in a W (no effect on GPA) or WF (counted as 0.00 on GPA) on your record based on what you have earned in the class.
- The "W/WF" class will not count towards FT status for international students or for Federal Aid (zero credits).
- Stay above 12 credits: keep full-time status.*
- Fall below 12 credits: lose full-time status.**
- Get off track with MAP?
- No tuition refund.
How
- Fill out a Withdrawal Form.
- Get the signatures of the academic advisor, professor, and department chair.
- If needed, get signatures of Financial Services and International Student Services.
- Turn in to Office of the Registrar. The fee will be applied to your account and can be paid at the Cashier's Office.
I Grade
(serious extenuating circumstances)
What
- "Incomplete"
- Indicates course work has not been completed because of serious extenuating circumstances.
- Up to one year is granted to do the work.
Impact
- If one year has elapsed and the grade has not been changed, it will become an F and be computed as a 0.0 in the GPA.
- Keep a full-time status.* (The grade is processed at the end of the semester when the semester is over.)
How
- Make arrangements with your instructor before the end of the semester.
- Ask instructor to fill out and turn in an I Grade Form (approved by department chair) to the Office of the Registrar within one week after grades are due.
- A Grade Change Authorization Form must be processed through the Office of the Registrar on completion of course work.
Reduced Load
What
- Make arrangements with your instructor before the end of the semester.
- Ask instructor to fill out and turn in an I Grade Form (approved by department chair) to the Office of the Registrar within one week after grades are due.

Impact
- Get off track with MAP?
- Keep full-time status.*
- Federal aid will likely be affected. Please see a financial aid counselor.
- Current scholarships and next semester scholarship eligibility remains as if taking 14 credits
How
- Have Health Services or Counseling Services fill out the reduced load approval form (it will go to the student life VP for approval).
- Go to your academic advisor for a reduced load for the last semester.
Discontinue
What
- Withdrawing from ALL classes in a semester or session (with a W or WF after the drop period is over).
Impact
- Avoid receiving "F" grade (after drop period is over will receive a W or WF)
- Tuition reimbursement (varies: full, partial, none).
- If you have received Federal Aid you may need to return a portion.
- $10 fee will be applied for voluntary discontinuance
- Have to reapply for admission if not returning the next semester.
- Former students in good academic, ecclesiastical, and financial standing with the University should be readmitted without issue.
- International students will need to leave the U.S. immediately.
How
- Log into mybyuh.
- Click on Student.
- Click on Request Discontinuance.
- Fill out the form and submit it online.
*Keep full-time status: keep campus housing, employment, visa status (international students), and scholarship; on reduced load talk to a financial aid counselor about federal aid.
**Lose full-time status - possible impact includes: lose campus housing, lose on-campus employment (F/W), receive only partial federal aid.
Note: international students lose visa status and are subject to immediate removal from the U.S.
