BYU–Hawaii Honor Code

All BYU-Hawaii students are expected to abide by the University Honor Code. Any students who do not abide by the BYU–Hawaii Honor Code are subject to disciplinary actions. For more information regarding the Honor Code please visit the Honor Code website.

Ecclesiastical Endorsement

Ecclesiastical endorsements are not required for distance learning students.

Financial Requirements

Students outside the United States pay a subsidized tuition rate determined by the country in which they reside. For more information about tuition rates, visit our Cost & How to Pay page.

Time Requirements

Students who enroll in online courses will need to plan on spending three to four hours of work per week for every credit they enroll in. Thus, a student who enrolls in seven credits will need to set aside 21 to 28 hours per week to do their coursework. Students who speak English as a second language will likely need to set aside more time for their courses.

Technology Requirements

As part of BYU–Hawaii, online students will be expected to interact through video. This includes watching videos from teachers and other students and submitting videos of their own.

In order to participate in online classes you will need the following:

• A computer with a 2.0 GHZ processor

• Screen resolution of 800x600 or higher

• 160GB Hard Drive

• 1GB of memory

• WebCam

• Microphone

• Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome

• Adobe Flash Player

• High-Speed Internet

English Language Requirements

All BYU-Hawaii online courses are in English and all students must be proficient in English to be successful. To help students who are not proficient in English, BYU–Hawaii has a large English as an International Language (EIL) program. This program accepts students at varying English levels and gives them the language skills they need to excel in university courses.

Online English Evaluation

If English is not your first language you are required to complete a short English evaluation at the time of application. Those who score below a 50 on this evaluation are required to take EIL courses. Once you complete an EIL level you will advance onto the next EIL level. Below is a list of the EIL courses within each level and what other courses are available at each level.

Advancing EIL Levels

In order to advance from one EIL level to the next, you must receive a "B" or higher in each course at that level. For example, if you are currently in Intermediate Level I and wish to advance on to Intermediate Level II, you will need to receive a "B" grade or higher in EIL.
