One of the students spotlighted this month is Yiu Ming Chan from Hong Kong. Yiu Ming is a Mathematics major who is also minoring in Computer Science. Prior to his enrollment at BYU Hawaii, Yiu Ming attended Douglas College in Vancouver, Canada where he also studied Mathematics. One year later he transferred to BYU Hawaii. Yiu Ming is now a senior and will be graduating in June. For the past couple of months, Yiu Ming has been actively involved with two Mathematic Organizations. In January, he presented a paper at the Hawaii International Conference in Education. A month later, he presented the same paper at the Hawaii Counsel of Teachers in Mathematics (HCTM) Conference which was held at the University of Hawaii. The paper presented at both conferences was written with the help of our own Dr. David Furuto. The subject was how teachers could increase students motivation for learning using the history of Math. It also discussed how Math can be applied to real life. Thusfar, the paper has received good responses. Yiu Ming has various memberships in Phi Kappa Phi, Upsilon Pi Epsilon, and HCTM. In summer 2007, he did his internship at the Chinese University of Hong Kong where he worked as a teaching assistant for a Math professor. While at BYUH, he has gained experience working as a Mathematics tutor and is currently a teaching assistant for Dr. Furuto. Yiu Ming has several post graduation options. He plans to attend graduation school and have been offered scholarships from three universities: University of Akron-Ohio, University of Idaho, and University of South Florida. University of South Florida has offered him a full scholarship and he was able to do a campus visit last month. Another option is to take the actuary exam. Yiu Ming feels the exam would provide him an opportunity for a career as an actuary or a statistician. Yiu Ming says he enjoys studying Math because it is easily applicable to real life situations and it is related to various areas in life. The School of Computing congratulates Yiu Ming for his wonderful accomplishments and wishes him the best of luck in the future. |
