| The BA TESOL Major? Or the TESOL Education Major?
The primary factor that determines a student's choice between taking the BA TESOL Education major is their education objective. If your objective is to teach overseas (in any situtation) or to teach in adult or higher education in a US setting, you should choose the BA TESOL major. If your objective is to teach in an American Kindergarten through Grade 12(K-12) setting or with the US Department of Defense, you should choose the TESOL Ecuation major.
Students have a difficult time choosing between the two options when they don't know what they want to do or when they don't want to make a choice because they want to have all their options open. Those who want to increase their options should choose the TESOL Education major because it sets them on the road to being able to teach in almost any siutation abroad or in the US.
This choice, however, must be made early in your University education because the TESOL major is a double major and elminates elective credits from your graduation plan. The total credits required for TESOL plus the credits required for Education leaves no room for Electives. It's very simple. A double mjaor is not available to student who have already completed elective credits that cannot be applied to the requirements of either the Education or TESOL majors.
The School of Education is constantly working with the departments of education in other countries and more and more options are opening up for student teaching to be done at international locations. The Academic Advisor for the SOE's is the best person to ask about certifying to teach in public schools back in Asia or Polynesia.
