Areas of Professional Study and Interest: 

Earl D. Wyman has a diverse background in ESL which has provided him with experience with age groups from pre-school through higher education, with proficiencies ranging from basic literacy to academic readiness, in situations involving private tutoring, small groups, and large classes, in Asia, the South Pacific, North America, and the Middle East. He has taught students from scores of different countries and has experience as an administrator, evaluator, curriculum designer, materials writer, teacher trainer, and consultant. He has also been a plenary speaker at professional conventions in Portland, Oregon and Moscow, Russia; he has also been a regular presenter at TESOL, Inc.’s annual convention and a core planner of these conventions and others in British Columbia. He is a strong supporter of TESOL, Inc.

He has a B. Ed. (Secondary Social Studies) degree from the University of Alberta and an MA in Linguistics (TESOL) from BYU—Provo, Utah. He served as ESL department chair for the Vancouver (BC) School Board and taught at Simon Fraser University, University of British Columbia, and Vancouver Community College prior to accepting his position in Hawaii. He came to BYU—Hawaii to be director of the English Language Institute and to teach in the TESOL major. Along with being director of this intensive English program with 400 students in three countries, he also coordinated the Speaking, Listening, and Reading programs at different times and is currently on the curriculum committee of the English as an International Language program. As chair of the TESOL department, he coordinates TESL/TEFL activities, and he teaches classes in the TESOL major.

His present interests lie in on-going professional development, establishing internships abroad, and teacher training.
