Training on Peacebuilding for

Arbinger Institute

Arbinger Screen shot
The idea and diagram introduced in this interactive training come from an extensive body of work that solves what is known as the problem of "self-deception"--which, simply stated, is the problem of not knowing, and resisting the possibility, that one has a problem. Because self-deception is deeper than a behavioral problem, the discovery to the solution for self-deception revealed a language with which to address the deeper matters--the issues that underlie most of the challenges faced by the people we live and work with, including ourselves.

Arbinger is a worldwide institute that helps organizations, families, individuals, and communities solve the problems created by self-deception.

At the Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC), e-learning solutions were needed to provide standards, clear explanations, audio-visual demonstrations, and dynamic interactivity to engage the college-aged employees in an active learning environment. Such training was aimed to help improve employee performance in a tight budgetary environment.

Mongolian Medical Training Project

Mongolia

This high-level collaborative project between BYUH and the Health Sciences University of Mongolia (HSUM) developed computer-assisted training for doctors and medical students in Mongolia. HSUM provided the medical expertise while BYUH's IDD program provided the instructional development expertise. The finished product has great impact on medical training in Mongolia. As Togie, one of the BYUH students from Mongolia who worked on the project said, "I feel so honored to be on this project, because it has literally saved the lives of my people."  President Eric Shumway and Dr. Peter Chan received honor diplomas from HSUM partly due to this work.

Training titles include Appendectomy, Cholecystectomy, First Aid, Nursing, OB/GYM, and Thyroidectomy.  They will not be available on this website in order to protect the privacy of the patients filmed.

After learning about the Mongolian medical training project, the Catholic University of Porto Alegre (PURCS) in Brazil requested the help of Dr. Chan and IDD students in developing a training program on psychiatry principles for general doctors. The finished product covers trainings on Depression and Psychosis. Dr. Sean Random, a Clinical Psychologist and BYUH faculty, said, "I have reviewed many computer-assisted medical training programs, but this one is superior in its ability to show real patients along with multiple perspectives from psychiatrist, psychologist, and social worker. It gives learners an in-depth understanding of these mental problems.

This project is not available for general public in order to protect the privacy of the patients filmed.  You may contact Dr. Peter Chan at peterchanbyuh@gmail.com to request special permission to view this project.

BYUH Student Employment
Standards Project

Student_Employment

In order to improve student learning in their on-campus employment, the university has developed nine Student Employment Standards. IDD students took on a challenge to develop computer-based training for supervisors on three of these standards: 1. Clear Expectations, 2. Rewards and Progression, and 3. Evaluation. The resulting product is now being used by the Human Resources department to train full-time supervisors. (This training also include a video message from President Gordon B. Hinckley.)
