Welcome to Instructional Design and Development (IDD)!

The goal of the IDD program at Brigham Young University Hawaii is to equip students from any academic discipline with the skills, knowledge, and experience necessary to create effective instruction. When students enter the IDD program, they will learn a wide range of media development skills in video, graphics, web, and multimedia authoring through practice exercises and projects.  These marketable skills are applicable in various industries regardless of what career goals students have.  They will learn important instructional design and storytelling concepts that provide the fundamental cognitive scaffold for understanding and applying principles of effective instructional and media development.  The program will also provide students with authentic projects so that they learn to apply the knowledge and skills in real-world situations.

Students with training in this area are in high demand.  The American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) estimated that $109 billion was spent in 2006 for training in the U.S., with a major portion spent on e-learning.  This amount does not include the large sum that has been invested in developing online courses by universities and other institutions.  This demand is prevalent not only in the U.S. but also in other countries in Asia and Pacific region.

As BYU-Hawaii is increasingly interested in using technology to prepare students before arrival on campus, improve their on-campus learning experience, and extend the learning experience to more people through distance learning, students in IDD will have many opportunities to participate in the design and development process which will in turn become
valuable learning opportunities to them.
