Educational Learning Experience! On March 19, 2008, several History majors, Political Science majors, and a lone Biology major (who invited him?) traveled to the Asian-Pacific Center for Strategic Studies to participate in an Hawaii Emerging Leaders Program forum. Sponsored by the Pacific Forum CSIS and the Pacific Asian Affairs Council, the program allows Hawaii students to meet, discuss, and hear lectures from experts in U.S.-Asian relations. The March meeting featured the topic "Islam in Asia" and brief presentations from Dr. Taj Hasmi, Dr. Ehsan Ahrari, Dr. Robert Wirsing and others. Our student participants (20 in all) comprised some 2/3 of the total student attendees and "played a big part in its success." Also, BYU-H student questions kept the scholars in their seats for a full 30 minutes after the scheduled conclusion, prompting Dr. Wirsing to compliment us on our engaging participation.
Phi Alpha Theta Induction Ceremony On March 6, 2008, the History Department sponsored an induction ceremony, increasing the number of our own Phi Alpha Theta chapter by five: Jess Bradfield, Will Perry, Gordon Platt, Greg Dowden, and Kylee Kim. Meeting in the McKay Foyer, the inductees were treated to a time-honored ceremony in which robed History faculty represented past epochs and offered sagely advice under the reverent atmosphere of flickering candlelight. Afterwards, students and faculty alike tested their knowledge of historical dates under the tutelage of Dr. Tueller. (Somehow Will Perry won the prize--a crystal paper weight.) Students and faculty alike then took seats on the orange couches and discussed the significance of an article by American Historical Association president Gabrielle M. Spiegel entitled "The Case for History and the Humanities ."
