David O. McKay Center for Intercultural Understanding

President David O. McKay, when founding BYU Hawaii, had a vision that “from this school will go men and women whose influence will be felt for good toward the establishment of peace internationally."

That vision has become BYUH’s vision. BYUH exists to “assist individuals in their quest for perfection and eternal life and in their efforts to promote world peace and international brotherhood”

The David O. McKay Center for Intercultural Understanding helps BYUH students, faculty, staff  and alumni fulfill that prophecy by functioning as a cross-cultural peacebuilding laboratory that:

  • Educates BYUH students, faculty, staff and community members with the theoretical and practical tools they need to be leaders and peacebuilders.  Currently the McKay Center offers:
    1. A professional Intercultural Peacebuilding Certificate
    2. Campus forums on community and world events
    3. An online community that brings together hundreds of students, faculty and alumni who dialogue over community and world problems
  • Sponsors community building and cross cultural leadership opportunities and projects in the university, community and the world.  Current McKay Center projects include:
    1. Anatomy of Peace workshops open to students, staff and faculty
    2. Peace in the Home workshops for BYUH married students
    3. Kawaihiola (Edible Schoolyard Project) at Laie Elementary School
    4. Consulting and training for PeacePlayers International
